Shanghai: Hot in the city

43degrees.jpgThe Shanghai Daily tells us that the city's "red hot alarm was sounded yesterday for the second time this summer." Shanghaiist isn't sure if the alarm is audible or not -- we can't hear much over our air conditioner, which we bet will likely shut off soon due to a power outage. The red hot alarm sounds "when temperatures are between 35 and 38 degrees" -- 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit -- and we assume it just stops working if it gets any hotter than that. Temperatures hit 36 degrees (97 F) yesterday, which is what the Shanghaiist weather center is reporting now. But it feels like 43 degrees. Forty-three degrees! That's 109.4 degrees Fahrenheit!

Thank God, we're in the middle of the rainy season though. All that rain is really helping to cool things down.

(If you, like Shanghaiist, still have trouble converting Celsius to Fahrenheit after nearly three years in the country, try this.)

UPDATE: It's actually raining!

UPDATE II: (15 minutes later) And now it's not.
