As the J.B. in question, I just thought I'd mention that I ended up going with Tailor Chen, and was very happy with the finished product. I gave him a picture from a magazine and he ended up getting it almost exactly right, which was both nice and (having had experience with cheaper tailors in Beijing) completely unexpected. He charged 800 RMB in the end, and I was happy to pay it.

(On that note, I also went to the Ritz-based Dave, and his quote for the suit I wanted was $500 US, which was a little steep for a few weddings a year.)

The only down side to Tailor Chen was that he took a while--almost two-and-a-half weeks. He said it was his busy time, but who knows. Also, when taking my measurements, he said I was fat, although his assintant quickly pointed out that Tailor Chen was much rounder than I was, which was appreciated. (Plus, I'm 6 ft. 180 lbs--is that fat now?)

Anyway, thanks again for the article--I'd recommend Tailor Chen to anyone who wanted a suit made for the occasional special event.

Great Article.

Just found this site today and it's bookmarked for future reading.

I am due to move to Shanghai in a few weeks and had been wondering about the Tailor situation, especially since I have read so much conflicting advice on the web.

Keep up the good work.
