Happened to find this post. As of December 19th, Free Soul is still standing and still empty. But, the bar has become one of my favorite places to hangout by myself and I never feel lonely in the bar. :)

The great thing about Shanghai, or the worst thing, is the complexity of the market...not much is really what it seems. Here's one: this bar is probably supported by hedge fund you don't know about, who employ forgettable faces you can't remember. Every now and then their massive rave orgies rock that place and then it is left silent. You don't need "riff-raff" foot traffic when you've got corporate backing like this place has.

Personally, I'm all for classy-looking clubs that are empty on a Thursday night and struggling to survive... It means you get the place for yourself and your buddies, and the owner repeatedly bribes you with cheap drinks in the vain hope you'll bring more people next time... :)

So it's like, an extremely mediocre bar that just happened to hire a decent promoter? That's still not going to make it a place to hang out. And it's not like there's a glut of expats who like to hang out at bars after work on Thursday and Friday nights. Don't we have enough bars in Shanghai already? Is demand really that big? (enough bars, and not enough drum'n'base nights; hooray Madame Zung!)
