And after the scuffle, Amcham, Britcham, EUcham and Ozcham had a joint meeting and declared that the sky is blue and the grass is green, the business environment was excellent and every foreign company. should hire old china hands to do consulting for them.

regarding the naming of names: another angle you might want to consider is the context: GWB is a well known person and the Iraq war is not exactly obscure either. I think that in contrast, the relative lack of information about the people in relation to the conflict that spilled out the streets would make it unwise to name names because it is more likely that one could take things out of context. Of course, any savvy reader should know that i am not stating a fact about someone's guilt or innocence, but rather just repeating what is in fact written on a banner--but i guess we were just trying to be on the safe side. the pictures do show, quite clearly, the names.
This information is therefore not up front and center, but neither was it deleted or entirely ommitted.

Why not name names? I assume if you saw a demonstration with a banner reading 'George Bush is a War Criminal' you wouldn't report that the banner noted that 'a well-klnown Texan who runs a large country that we can't name was labelled a war criminal today'?

I am really impressed with the Shanghai Police ability to keep this from escalating without the use of to many heavy handed tactics, but then perhaps some of that wasn't included in the article.

Also, this is not a story we were following--it sort of just happened near where we happened to be. Most of this information is anecdotal. There is no proof that the hired thugs were hired by the woman in question; all we know is that from what people have said, there has been bad blood b/w the two businesses since the split up a year ago, with lawsuits being involved (again, we don't have the details of that). This is actually a pretty complicated story, if you try to nail down all the facets of it, that is.

Because we don't know the whole story. We haven't talked to the accused. It would have been journalistically irresponsible to name names. But if you really want names, you don't need to look very hard.

Why the reluctance to name names? Because they are only accusations? Because of the accused's status?
