Shanghaiist has fond memories of ritualistic post-swimming-practice trips to the Dairy Queen for a Peanut Buster Parfait. We remember these trips being almost a daily occurence. Oh, to be young again in the pre-mandatory-nutrition-information-labels United States! Our metabolism now is not quite what it was when we were 8, so we'll have to make our trips to Shanghai's three Dairy Queens much less frequent. Wait -- Shanghai has three Dairy Queens? You betcha. All of them are new this year. No more traveling to Beijing just for a Blizzard! (Shanghaiist never did that ... and if we did, we wouldn't admit it.)
We first noticed a Dairy Queen last weekend in Xujiahui outside of Orient Shopping Center (东方商厦 or dong fang shang sha), one of the big malls overlooking that insane intersection down there where just about every road in southern Shanghai comes together. This Dairy Queen (pictured) was a stand, not a restaurant -- they call it a "Treat Works" -- and holy shit if it didn't come paired with an Orange Julius, another staple from Shanghaiist's mall-going youth. The people behind the counter told us the shop had been there for one month. They told us there's another one at Yu Yuan (488 Wuning Nan Lu, No. 2108) near Chen Huang Miao (城隍庙) -- the Dairy Queen website has a tiny photo of that one. The third one is somewhere in Pudong. We didn't catch where exactly -- we rarely cross the river -- but our guess would be Super Brand Mall. But that's just a guess.
We didn't eat much -- a small Oreo Blizzard (RMB 15) and a medium Orange Julius (RMB 18) -- but everything at these places is pretty normal (at least they are in Beijing). And if you order a Blizzard, they will turn it upside down to prove it is so thick it won't fall out. (Do they do that in the States?) And yes, they do have Peanut Buster Parfaits. But unfortunately no, they don't have butterscotch topping for dipped cones. Or is Shanghaiist the only person in China who likes that?

Wuning Nan Lu (武宁南路) and Yuyuan/Cheng Huang Miao are on opposite sides of the city. Any idea which one the DQ is at?
They do turn Blizzards upside down on this side of the globe as well.
