ARK Live House was filled to overflowing last night as locals and expats alike turned out to see just who would be crowned China's best turntablist at the Chinese national qualifiers for the DMC DJ Championships.
Taking home top honors was Beijing's DJ Wordy, who (despite the handicap of being the first contestant to perform) threw together an impressive 6-minute set of beat juggling, scratching and good ol' fashioned party music. Shanghai's own DJ Fortune made a strong showing as well -- strong enough to earn him 3rd place honors out of the 11 contestant pool.
The evening proved to be more than just your average hip hop gathering, as mainland China's finest came out to support and celebrate. Guangzhou-based rap collective DeearNa threw down in style during the mid-competition break, Shanghai's Dragon Dance Studio put together a couple of old-school breaking routines, MiG founder Sice added an element with a live graf-writing showcase, and Beijing's hip hop tour de force Yin Ts'ang Society (隐藏社会) capped things off with a head-nodding lesson in Beijing fengr (风格儿 or style).
All in all, the 2005 DMC DJ Championships China Final was a veritable microcosm of mainland Chinese hip hop culture. Shanghaiist was proud to be there and hopes that the precedent set by V-Nutz for throwing a bangin' party this year will continue for many years to come.
