Even better than the real thing?

463267_2.jpgAccording to this report (in Chinese), Shanghai's first official Coca-Cola retail store opened its doors on September 9. The report states that the location is somewhere on Nanjing Xi Lu -- and it's great detailed reporting like that that we here at Shanghaiist are trying to emulate, thus we don't have an address for you either. (Hey, readers ... any help?) The store sells all kinds of Coca-Cola related products, such as clothes and weird useless plastic things that have the logo on them. The report also proudly states that since this is the only official Coke stores outside the US and Japan, that this marks the first inroads the soft drink giant has made into the Asia-Pacific region. Now Shanghaiist is no geography expert, but somehow there seems to be a contradiction contained in those last two sentences ...

If you get blisters on your feet from wandering around Nanjing Lu looking for your little (200 square meters) piece of glinty red and fizzy heaven -- serves you right for wearing Pepsi shoes -- then let your fingers do the walking and check out this online store from Taobao.com, where you can buy assorted Coca-Cola products.

This is not as much of a contradiction as it looks like on the surface. In many industries, multinational corporations' Japanese operations are virtually independent from the rest of the company and are not included in the "Asia-Pacific" region. I don't know why it's like this, but it probably has something to do with protectionist regulations in some industries. It could also be that Japan is a fairly well established market compared to the emerging markets in the other APAC nations.

None of that logic holds, though, when you notice that the same company excluding Japan from APAC has a single operation covering EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa).

That would be about 100 meters EAST of Shi Men Lu on the south side of Nanjing Lu.

The shop is opposite the Bank of America office (Bo Ai Da Sha), and appeared very suddenly - couldn't have taken more than four days from vacant space to open doors.

The store is located on Nanjing Xi Lu near Shi Men Lu, walk in the direction towards Shanghai TV station--you can't miss it
