Indie rock weekend

Cui Jian was THE Chinese rock star of the 80s; but that was then, and this is now. The Halloween weekend is coming up, and the indie rock scene is here to answer Shanghailander cravings for unsigned talent with several shows lined up:

As we all know the weekend starts on Thursday, and this weekend is no exception, with B6 and his gang ready to lay down some beats at the underground (how appropriate) C's bar. Word is that Ozone will start off with 80s goth/industrial/Belgian New Beat (get it? Belgian New ... yeah, we don't either), followed by B6, MHP, Amnjk and Emcore playing some harder chunes to move your feet. The combination of a repeat crowd from their earlier two gigs and cheap drinks from the bar should make this Antidote another hit.

After a row with Yuyintang staff, Harley's has fallen out of favor with the rock promoters, but the bar continues to book concerts on their own. This coming Saturday, progressive metal heads and founders of eponymous Qiying Music, Qiying, bring their crew to the stage for a Halloween special. Get ready for polished, classic punk from Loudspeaker; emo-ish introspection from Crystal Rose; in Shanghaiist's opinion, the city's best progressive metal from Xuanwumen; and more goodies out of a mixed stylistic bag from a handful of other bands.

Next up, the college scene unites with some Shanghai old-timers on Sunday evening for a true Halloween bash at the city's newest venue for live rock, the Yangpu District's own Live Bar. From what we hear, this place has the right combination of alcohol, noise and cops that make for an enjoyable night.

Finally, for music aficionados looking for the avant-garde choice, Shanghaiist is curious about the arrival of Bugge Wesseltoft, self-described nu-jazz artist, on his Asian "New Conception of Jazz" tour. Wesseltoft will be playing piano, keyboard, sampling, remix, laptop, backed up by DJ Jonas Lonna and drummer Rickard Gensollen. For the full experience, catch their evening set at Xintiandi's ARK Livehouse and their late-night set at Club JZ.

Here's a nice page on Belgian New Beat, fyi...
http://www.jahsonic.com/NewBeat.html

If you're too lazy to read that, here's some trivia questions:

Q: What song is credited as *starting* the Belgian New Beat genre? Why?

A: Legend is a Belgian DJ accidently played a EBM/Industrial club hit (A Split Second - "Flesh"), a 45-RPM 12" at 33-RPM speed. The crowd went nuts and a new style was born. Dark and slowed-down, "New Beat" attracted a following of Brits fatigued on acid house raves ... and with cheaper drugs on the continent...

Q: What Belgian New Beat act opened for Madonna on a USA tour? (early 1990s)

A: This Beat Is, This Beat Is... Technotronic. Belgian New Beat producer Jo Bogaert formed this silly mainstream act and took the sound to the world stage. Technotronic opens for Madonna on her USA tour, representing Belgium with a gawdam beach party theme(!?) Pump Up The Jam!
