Poor old DJ Sasha swung through Shanghai last year and was roundly savaged by the media and just about anyone who attended his gig. Shanghaiist wasn’t there (darn it!), but among the complaints we heard lodged were these:
- Ticket prices. RMB 480 for general admission; RMB 1080 for VIP.
- A VIP ticket (yes, some were actually sold …) provided little else but access to an upper floor which meant looking at the tops of lots of heads.
- Ticket price did include an “open” bar. Open only to Chivas drinkers, however, since that was the only product available.
- Taxi-free-zone at the end of the show.
- Sasha suffered technical problems including a broken iPod. (Shanghaiist can sympathize here: our Pod has just come back from the Apple Centre on Guangdong Lu).
In fact, word has it that the only people who had fun was the small group who inadvertently ended up at Sasha’s on Dongping Lu, after a mix-up with their taxi driver.
Anyway, the DJ/producer now has a chance to redeem himself. Or at least, his tour promoters do. His upcoming China tour will include appearances in Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou and here in Shanghai.

I want to comment on last year's venue. There were 3 sections where the gig was happening. The dancefloor, the bar and the (shall I call it?) patio.
So the fun was trying to dance to his music on a carpeted dance-floor. Not only that, we were not allowed to smoke nor drink in the dance area.
In the bar area, the only drinks that were available were Chivas, Red Bull and water (I think). You can hear the music and groove along whilst holding a plastic cup full of the incredibly awesome concoction of Chivas and water within the bar area. The only catch is you can't smoke in there.
And then there was the patio. Where we party people can drink and talk and smoke....to no music. Yeah sure you can hear the bass pumping whilst the floor gyrates beneath you but its hardly satisfying is it? I might be wrong...
I think there are people who appreciated the clown (was it?) on stilts sitting on a mobile ladder thingy; who was being pushed around the 3 areas whilst giving out roses to clubbers. And the GOBO lights that pranced around displaying the Chivas logo. That was an experience of a lifetime.
So Sasha is coming back yeah? To VIP room...the fancy-named club with no dancefloor? Oh dear. The misery of the punters.
Is it just me or does this Sasha guy look like Ed Norton?
A carpeted dance-floor? Someone needs to be shot for that one.
Great dance music is about dancing for hours. Dancing for hours is about not caring about what you look like, who you are, or where you are. Is it any wonder it just hasn't worked in Shanghai?
Paul Oakenfold, one of the best djs in the world, came to dkd and they of course decided to sell far too many tickets so in fact no one could dance at all.
