Notes from the Underground: This week in music

Hard Rock Rules Shanghai!Happy Halloween? Get your fill of candy and partying this weekend? No? Well, neither did Shanghaiist, so here's our picks for a rockin' next weekend!

The theme for this week is out-of-towners, as several bands from Beijing come to spice up Shanghai's nightlife. On Friday night, locals Slit open for Beijing's Happy Avenue at promoter Yuyintang's new venue of choice, the Bar 288. Tucked away at the east end of Zhaojiabang Rd, this one should be a challenge in terms of public transportation — Shanghaiist likes to pinch a penny here or there — but what with the turnover rate for bars in Shanghai, we shouldn't have to worry about that for long.

After joining Shanghaiist for Shanghai Shenhua's last home-game on Saturday evening, celebrate their (possibly) clinching runner-up in the China Super League by catching Beijing band Sound Fragment playing another Yuyintang gig at Bar 288. Or if you're in the mood for local talent, head over to the Ark at Xintiandi for a set by long-time scenesters The Herbs (but show up a little later than the usual 9:15 if "Chinese and Western covers" by opening band Reload are not your thing).

Finally, if Bar 288's sound system just didn't cut it, catch an encore by Sound Fragment at the Ark on Monday night, just the thing to lighten your Monday blues.

Happy Avenue, Slit @ Bar 288
Reload & The Herbs @ the Ark
Sound Fragment @ Bar 288

Big ups to Micah for putting up info about the SLIT concert, it was fun times and a cool location. Micah, if so inclined, you should put up a little sub-site about the Music scene, you seem to know your stuff and the scene could really use a better source of information.

You can get all the same information from Sus2 and Shanghai Underground Music BBSs, or the Yuyintang website. Of course, that's all in Chinese.

I'm in the process of setting up an English-language website/forum in cooperation with the Shanghai Underground Music Network, but in the meantime I'm sure Shanghaiist will continue to cover the concert announcements and reviews.

BTW, you're right -- SLIT rocked tonight. In my opinion they completely overshadowed Happy Avenue...not really what you want from the opening band, but nice for us in the audience.

Like Brad said, the language barrier is still high enough that I can go to just a few sources to get my info and still have a big leg up on anyone else (except Brad and other 中国通, hehe): SUS2, Livehouse News (with nifty RSS feed), Qiying Music BBS, Rockself, occasionally Shanghaining, Culture.sh.cn, RSS feeds of a major ticketing website, and then the random weblog or two, plus a flyer from Ark if I pass through Xintiandi near the start of the month, and maybe a phone call here and there.

If you want a little preview of the announcements I post on Shanghaiist, in these posts I'm pretty much just summarizing the information that I continually update on my online calendar.

Glad you could make it out.
