sorry, but i feel the need to come to shanghaiist's defense: 1. you are commenting on a year-old post. and now you are making me do the same. 2. more often than not, commenters have nothing to do with the blogs they comment on. they are not "members". you and i are commenting and we are not "members". from reading the post it looks like all the "mean-meaning" people were commenters. so why slam shanghaiist? all they did was point out ms. movius' correction. 3. if anyone did any badmouthing, it was ms. movius: "It turns out to be one of those oblivious expat blogs I find so pointless". she says this about a blog she claims to have never visited?

shanghaiist is wrong for putting her name for frontal attacks by its mean-meaning blog members. lisa movius is valuable to the scene in shanghai as much as this blog is, and it think it is ridicilous that all the very few players in shanghai are willing to badmouth, instead of supporting, each other. she is a good writer, crucial to the music and art audiences. you are a good blog catering to a more general audiences, especially helpful to those who are transitioning to the scene in shanghai. also, lisa seems to make a point about that magazine not representing her thoughts correctly instead of going out there to critique you. why be so defensive, and try to crush her? not cool, shanghaiist.

I'm inclined to supsect that Lisa Movius is too busy up-sucking her way into Shanghai's exploitative, elitist, fahion-victim classes to actually be this intelligent (14 of 25 articles in just the left column of her site revolve around the luxury goods industry) but somewhere along the way she obviously learned lesson one of 'being somebody': say stupid shit about things you can't possibly have experience first hand. See, if she actually read Shanghaiist, she might know that promoting multiple aspects of a city with sardonic wit beats out lame-o, third person narratives about yourself, how cool your gallery-opening-life is, and your nutrionally abused cat.

How can Lisa write such things about Shanghiist : "It turns out to be one of those oblivious expat blogs I find so pointless. It apparently is one of the parties responsible for turning Tanghui from a cool dive into Windows with more expensive beer by bringing all the clueless laowai over, driving away all the artists and musicians who used to go there. So I am rather embarrassed to be on the record as endorsing it." I had a look at her web page.... first my seight went crazy.. the fonts are too small for anybody and this perhaps to cover the words... As a not english speaker person, I found boring to show the hip side of shanghai, the fashion, the catwalk, the boring western way to promote superficial things .... and perhaps the superficial way to get angry about the shanghaiist web site only because he drove the Tanghui into a different directions.... but as I am keep telling to the people who spent 400 rmb for a restaurant or the people who want to play pool with only english or american bloke.... where are you living ???? are we in china sometimes???? what is all this crap about shanghai?? who write about the rest 13,999,999 peoplel living here? ...no words.... P.s. is she the one dealing the FCC in shanghai? a good reason not to join it....

What I really want to know is, how did 8 Days end up having Lisa Movius recommend Shanghaiist when she didn't do so? If I were Lisa, I'd be ditching 8 Days for misquoting me, much more than Shanghaiist (although the misquote implies a connection.)

I know Lisa, she's actually quite nice. I don't blame her for wanting to keep it real, she's been here for a looong time and naturally, she would feel territorial about this city. No need for mean spirited remarks people. Although, I would have to question her judgement if she agreed to be interviewed by 8 Days.

I go to Shanghaiist to read about Shanghai, I could go to every other Shanghai blog if I wanted pointless meta-blogging about the Shanghai blogging scene.

Shanghaiist sucks! Lisa Movius is a slim, attractive woman who is so indie that her shirt doesn't fit. Any of you stinking foreigners who haven't been here as long as I are oblivious, and any who've been here longer are probably disgusting old perverts with yellow fever. How dare you go to bars and cause them to make money! Don't you know that the success of indie music shows is inversely proportional to the number of foreigners present? By publishing useful information about underground music in English, you're lowering the bar for entry -- I can't feel special anymore!

An immature person would say that Lisa is fat and very ugly. But I am not. So, I will show you the genius, the insight, the sheer clarity, wit and wonder of her "writing": "The lush, tranquil, ancient city of Hangzhou feels a lifetime apart from the hectic internationalism of Shanghai" That one (from her absolutely crucial and "unique" site) will keep me whimsically pondering for weeks.

So where are good martinis served up quick in Shanghai? Aura of pretension at location not required. Will need to know sometime in Q106. Anyone care to join me and the Mrs. for a few rounds? correct me if i'm wrong, but sounds like the rant of a frustrated foreign girl determined to keep it real in shanghai. perhaps she should move to anhui. let's face it, shanghai is for unemployed foreigners masquerading as english teachers who wish they could afford a table at bar rouge. shanghaiist may very well be an oblivious expat blog, but at least it tries. 8days on the other hand is clearly an oblivious expat weekly
