The PRC on the WWW (in English)

chinesegovernmentwebsite.jpgThe Chinese government has launched an English-language website, english.gov.cn, and if taken with the appropriate handful of salt, it looks like it could actually be kind of helpful. The site is currently in beta mode (anyone know how to say "beta mode" in Chinese?), according to the official announcement from Xinhua, which we will quote from liberally right now:

English.gov.cn is the gateway to a wealth of Chinese government resources. Visitors can browse under a variety of topics such as "China Today," "China and World," "Official Publications," "Press Briefings," "Leaders Highlights" and "Laws and Regulations." They can also access "Services for Non-Residents" to find out about investment in China, travel tips, children adoption and lots more.

The official website presently provides authoritative and up-to-date information on the Chinese government, and its programs, initiatives and services, as well as facts about China. It will continuously increase the content of information and services in the future.

The launch of English.gov.cn serves as a catalyst for the world to have a better understanding of China's foreign policies, its role in international arenas and achievements in national construction, as well as an accelerator for a greater influx of foreign investments into and visitors to China.

i'm surprised the chinese govt waited so long to put up an english site, especially given the nation's globally-important economic growth. the site does seem pretty informative, though...they seem to have got their beta version pretty good.

It's still vague and incompletely, but then what did I expect. Also, it's very Beijing centric: a lot of links in the visa and immigration section point to pages on the website of the Beijing PSB.

beta mode in Chinese maybe is “内测” or“测试版”:)
