Howdy folks, and welcome back to this week's indie music preview, brought to you by Фёдор Миха́йлович Достое́вский (that's Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky) and the letter Ф (English equivalent: f).
Thursday: The weekend starts a day early this week, with German punk band Lucky Punch pulling into Live Bar. This seedy dive is our favorite venue tucked away into the back alleys of Yangpu district, but why's it gotta be so darn remote? Ah, the sacrifices one makes to be indie.
Friday: Beijing post-punk band Re-Establishing the Rights of Statues will fittingly inherit the stage from the punks. Word on the street is that they got some help editing their latest CD from the father of ambient music Brian Peter George St. Jean le Baptiste de la Salle Eno (Wikipedia is factual crack). And combined with the fact that the SUBS, another Beijing post-punk band, is on just about everybody's list of favorite Shanghai indie concerts of 2005, Shanghaiist is expecting a good show. Also Friday Thursday night is the second installment of Brown Nylon Suit at underground bar C's, a set of rock, electro, new wave, and punk from the bar's micro-DJ booth for the matching nano-dancefloor. But who goes to a bar to dance, right?
Saturday: Shanghaiist was especially excited about the Live Bar's double set: a Shanghai rock CD release party from the East District crew, and then an encore performance by Re-Establishing the Rights of Statues, but it looks as if that's been put on hold for now. Consolation will have to be found at the International Festival Chorus' rendition of Handel's Messiah at the Lyceum Theatre, and in a large mug of well-spiced eggnog. Word is that you can take your score to the Messiah, but that it's not technically a sing-a-long.
Sunday: Shanghai rock takes to the road on Sunday, visiting Shanghai University's Baoshan campus to put on a show for the kiddies. Qiying, Cold Fairyland, Loudspeaker, and the Sultans of Rock join student band Broken to shake the school auditorium. Ah, wouldn't we like to relive those days. Like Cold Fairyland frontwoman Lin Di says, students need to listen to the different sounds in the world
to fend off the day when they become normal people
. Shanghaiist shivers. Also on Sunday and closer to home, the Lucky Punk will be doing their thing again at the Ark, for Shanghai's Xintiandi high rollers.
Update: Brown Nylon Suit 2 is happening Thursday, not Friday as originally reported above!

One clarification: Re-TROS are still playing at Live Bar on Saturday night (8PM). Only the East District CD release was postponed.
Do you know how long the Re-Tros Saturday show will be?
Do you know anything about PLTC, who is playing at the JZ club on Saturday?

What Brad said. And all I really know is that there is a pretty cool jazz scene in Shanghai centered around JZ's, the Cotton Club, and a vocalist named Coco. I'm just not plugged into it.

Can I break with Shanghaiist convention for a minute, and say: Micah - great post. I'm not all that plugged into the rock scene (sitting at home playing with the cats is more my game that bouncing round the mosh pit) so I'm talking style more than substance, although posts like this may me want to get out there and join in the fun.
"Factual Crack" stands out as my favourite quote, and in the open source spirit I will now go on to brazenly use and abuse that wonderfully descriptive metaphor (I'll try and credit you each time I do)...
