Shanghaiist presents The Best Albums of 2005

Since Shanghaiist kicked off in July this year, we've inflicted opinion after opinion on you, our faithful readership. Here comes a whole bunch more.

This time we've taken it upon ourselves to inform you about the best music released in 2005. Specifically, the top 25 albums of the year (summed up in exactly 25 words each).

The list was painstakingly compiled by five Shanghaiist contributors. We say painstakingly because some of us absolutely loathed the choices of the others -- in fact, not a single album appeared in all five lists.

For the record, the five contributors comprised three Americans, a Scot and an Aussie. And judging from the complete absence of Chinese music from the list, it might be wise if next time we convince one of our Shanghainese friends to lend a hand. (Actually, as always, we encourage all of you to submit your own lists, thoughts, suggestions, insults-about-our-mothers as comments at the end of this very long post.)

Enough italicized intro, here it is ... the Shanghaiist top 25 for 2005. Enjoy.

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

1. Illinois by Sufjan Stevens

"John Wayne Gacy, Jr." is certainly creepy, yet it remains as undeniably beautiful as every other track on this LP. Best album of the year.

2. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.jpg

3. I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning by Bright Eyes

Critics of Jeff Mangum and Devendra Banhart will hate Conor Oberst’s voice, but they’ll be hard-pressed to dismiss his music: wonderful excursions in country-soaked folk.

Gimme Fiction.jpg

4. Gimme Fiction by Spoon

Finally -- thirty seconds into Track 7 -- we realised that, okay, Gimme Fiction is not the greatest rock album of the decade. Not far off though.

Here's some more selections from 2005 that are pretty dope, you can listen to samples on Amazon.

World: Amadou & Mariam - Dimanche a Bamako

Soundtrack: It's All Gone Pete Tong

Hip/Pop: Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business

Rap: Weerd Science - Friends and Nervous Breakdowns

Hip-hop: John Legend - Get Lifted

Metal: Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists

Interesing lists, but is it not a bit off-topic? This is a Shanghai blog right, not a music blog?

I'm pretty sure people in Shanghai listen to music. But now we go back to our regularly scheduled programming (until our movie list, which you can expect around Oscar time).

boooring. SNORE. why dont you guys stop copying & pasting from pitchfork and listen to some REAL music. whats real music you ask. NOT PITCHFORK!!!!

I had no idea anyone outside Canada might even know about Chad VanGaalen, but I was glad to hear that you do. Clinically Dead is certainly a very memorable song.
I also really enjoyed Amadou & Mariam in 2005, as well as Bright Eyes.
Maybe try Neko Case (honourary Canadian?) or Carolyn Mark in 2006?
What about the new Wang Fei album? I think she released one in 2005, but I haven't heard it.

I had never heard of Cari Lekebusch, but I'm listening to him/her now and it's pretty fcking decent stuff.

Thanks for that one.

Or is it The Advent. Damn soulseek and their "Track 1"

some are great picks, but where's these ones?

John Butler Trio - Sunrise Over Sea
Ben Folds - Songs for Silverman
David Gray - Life in Slow Motion

well, yes all great music, good to see Jeff Jorve with a little bit more variety in his choices. The MIA cd is pretty f-ing amazing. The quasimoto album is worth a listen, so all you in shangers should check it out. For some reason I really like Panic! At the Disco. The album is "A fever you can't sweat out" Its poppy and punk but shit man, the guy has a good voice. Sufjan is pretty amazing, and I can't blame anyone for plugging it. kudos on Of Montreal and and My morning Jacket. Thanks for introducing me to Danger Doom and Edan. Good Shit. Marc, hopefully, if you like Shanghaiist you like good music. Thank you Shanghaiist!

Kind of surprised not to see Imogen Heap's "Speak for Yourself" on anyone's list... I like it well enough.
