Beijing: You're queer? Not here

wereherewerequeer.jpgChina's first gay and lesbian festival was reportedly shut down by police over the weekend in Beijing. The series of films, plays, exhibitions and seminars on homosexuality was supposed to take place at the Dashanzi Art District, or 798 Factory. Police told organizers the event wasn't allowed because they "didn't have permission." Some festival participants reconvened at a local gay bar, only to discover that it was "temporarily closed for review."

“There is no reason for the police to stop us," said one participant, who, like a few others, ended up at a hotpot restaurant. "We are doing nothing to disturb social stability.”

Planning to work at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and am looking for a gay guy to correspond with in Beijing. I presently live in New York but will be re-locating temporarily to Sydney next March 2006 before coming to Beijing.
