Where to get a great massage in Shanghai

shui xiu fang massage.jpgOh sure, Shanghaiist goes to the red light "hairdressers" for a nice long wank just as much as the next guy (as long as the next guy has never been once), but we also like experiencing what you "norms" have at the massage parlours of Shanghai -- a massage. We have a new favourite place. At the north east corner of Changle Lu and Shaanxi Lu, behind several medium sized trees is a set of two buildings inside which unlimited massuers will pour out of holes in the walls to beautify you in any way you see fit (Map from SmartShanghai).

The "Great Wall" massage is our massage of choice (it's just a normal body massage, no ideas about the name), and it costs 98RMB for an hour. We have found that generally, massages in Shanghai focus on kneeding the muscle to relieve aches -- rather than pin-pointing knots in the back and getting them out. The experts here seem to know how get out your desk-induced twists and knots, and seem to really understand your back. There are also a plethora of the other usual services on offer, from hair-cuts, nail and skin treatments, foot massages (from 70RMB for 45 minutes) ...

Not having yet tried the skin and nail treatments, we can't tell you how good they are -- but the massage is the best we have experienced.

Samos Foot & Body Massage -- Shui Xiu Fang, 462 Changle Lu, Tel: 62566511.

I live in the French Concession and exercise frequently, so I like a good therapeutic massage. I have tried a number of shops in my neighborhood and the surrounding environs. While there are a few that have good therapists, I never really feel too good as many of these places are only superficially clean and I can smell mold. I am hypersensitive to mold. I alternate between Chinese and oil massages and the oils are greasy and clog my pores, especially in the summer.

I have tried a newly opened massage shop at 133 Tai An Lu near Huashan Lu called Helen Massage. I had been their in the previous set up and the place was dirty and not well run.

The new owners (Americanized Chinese) have done a great job of renovation and there isn't a trace of mold or dirt. That is great if you spend ~90 minutes face down getting a massage. Their oil massages are also good. They use imported organic base and aromatic oils from Germany where the safety standards are undisputed. The price is fair and the service is very good. I have tried the foot, Chinese, and oil massages and would recommend giving them a try.

Wanted to get a great massage in Shanghai so took Nick W advice and went to Samos foot and body massage. Had a great 2 1/2 hr pampering session cost around 400 rmb. Very reasonable for the experience and felt great afterwards.

    Thanks Nick

How does fuxing fran know that the old guy will refuse? Yikes! ;)

For those of you non-Chinese speakers out there, Rainbow massage on Yongjia Lu and Shaanxi Nan Lu (green sign, southeast corner) offers cheap massage at reasonable prices. I've only been there once, but it was clean and very professional.

Some of the best massages to be had in the city will be at the parlours staffed by blind people. Helen Blind Massage is an excellent choice, located at the corner of Tai'an Lu and Huashan Lu. Workers there have generally been trained and certified in Chinese massage, which ties itself into TCM forms like acupuncture to treat all sorts of ailments besides a sore back.

Blind parlours are all over the city and are generally cheaper (since you're not paying for a pretty face and a submissive giggle). For self-avowed prudes like the author of this article, be assured that you won't be propositioned for a 'special massage' from your blind masseuse.

in fact, even if you're feeling so audacious as to REQUEST a handjob from the sixty year old blind man massaging the kinks out of your ass, he'll politely refuse.
