It's definitely a typo, or the man was lying. I had an apartment near the intersaction of Xie Tu Dong Road and Xi Zhang Nan Road, which is close to the Expo site in Puxi. When I was selling the apartment, it got lots of interest from those people about to be relocated. It seemed they typically got more than US$2000 for EACH SQUARE METER. The Lao Nian Da Xun (Elder's Unversity) my mother went to has many people from this area, and almost all of them are exteremely happy with the compensation they got. So you know you cann't trust the Reuters either.

Oh, and by the way, the man who used to live next to XinTianDi probably got that much money because a rich international investment group was paying him to relocate.

The government aren't quite so generous.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those places.
Fengxian... the very name sends shivers down my spine.

But wait - BRAIN CANCER is better than Fengxian, so I suppose that makes Minhang roughly equivalent to... brain cancer.

This dissing of Minhang is unacceptable!!! We got light rail line number 5 going through the district! We got KFC's, got McD's!!! Minhang, compare to Fengxian, Jinshan, Baoshan, Chongming, and all this other districts outside the outer ring road, is heaven! Minhang rules!!!!!!

No, it's not a typo I'm afraid. My friend's mother works for the Shanghai government housing department, and tells me that this is a standard compensation fee for houses, even in central areas.

She also told me with some amusement about her team of specialist 'relocators' whose job it is to go round switching off people's electricity, breaking their windows and banging on their doors all night until they finally relent and go into exile in Minhang.

Have you ever been to Minhang? I'd rather live in a cardboard box in Fuxing Park.
