There are actually a number of decent options out there -- and that is something we never thought we would say when we first arrived here back in 2002. SH magazine dedicated a big chunk of their latest issue -- we're assuming they had this feature in the can and ran it when most of the staff was on vacation -- to the "Burger Battle," which starts with 16 of the city's top contenders and whittles them down to one champion. Rendezvous Cafe edged Luna in the final. Rendezvous is a decent -- and very safe -- choice, especially if you factor price into the equation. A burger at Rendezvous will cost you about half of many of the other contenders in the battle. And it is a no-frills burger, similar to what you could get at just about any roadside diner in the U.S., which usually does the trick just fine. But we bet in a blind taste test, when price is not an issue, Rendezvous may not make it out of the quarterfinals.
We have to admit, we haven't tried a lot of the burgers on SH's list. We've never even been to Luna, and wouldn't have expected it to be a place for hamburgers. Now, we may check it out. We think the Tapas Bar serves a good, affordable burger -- that's another place that people might not think of. We are really fond of the Montana Burger at Blue Frog and a trusted friend tells us that the A Future Perfect jalapeno burger is "excellent" -- it got knocked out of the battle in the first round by Rendezvous. People always speak highly of the burgers at Malone's, which advanced to the semis, but for some reason we have never gotten around to trying one there. We blame the fact that we are engaged to a vegetarian.
One glaring omission from the Battle's contenders was Cotton's. We suspect this is because the feature was finished before Cotton's re-opened in late December, and not because SH has some kind of grudge against the place. Quite the contrary, reports are that SH food writer Jarrett Wrisley has made Cotton's his second home.
It should be noted that the Burger Battle is a pain in the ass to read on the SH website (which is really the 8 Days website). The text is really small and the quarterfinals graphic doesn't seem to load. But you can read the big print OK. Kudos to SH, though, for continuing to update their old 8 Days site, since their new one has a definite dearth of content. It's a good place to start if you have a burger craving and don't know where to turn.

I thought it was a fair test.
I have tried Malones burgers, and while some people like them I just fail to find a single shred of TASTE in them.
Rendzvouz used to be the best on taste. I think that Blue Frog edges them now on taste, and it's only slightly more expensive.
Burgers should be no frills. Meat, bun, onions bacon cheese ketchup mayo (on bottom) mustard, done. None of this swiss cheese with hickory-whatever sauce, no thank you.
Where is Windows Scoreboard? Taste can go out the window if I can eat 5 of them for 50RMB.
Rendezvous is good, but the best? I dunno. Quality/price, yeah, it's top. Otherwise, it just feels, I dunno, acceptable but not stellar. If it were a burger in the States, it'd be below average.
Same goes for Scoreboard's burger... A real steal at 10 RMB, not that awesome, but damn do they go down well at that price.
Slightly more expensive? If memory serves a cheeseburger at Blue Frog will set you back 60 rmb, with the hickory-flavored swiss onion ring whatever ringing in at 70-80. A cheeseburger at Rendezous is 32 rmb, and it tastes better.
You can get everything you can get at Blue Frog for half the price somewhere else. (except for the brie and chicken sandwich - why was this taken off the menu?!) But it does have a nice ambience.
Even with price factored in Rendezous and Tapas Bar are still better tasting burgers. I've eaten Luna burgers a few times, and they should have been knocked out in the quarters. Big Bamboo's burger is a travesty. Malone's, like New York Pizza, is the msot delicious thing you've ever tasted for the first four bites, and then you just feel nauseus.
I prefer Moon River Diner's mushroom ragout burger. But a little bit out of the way, unless you live in Century Park or Gubei...
Blue Frog's burgers ARE orgasmic. And their set of 40 chicken wings are ve.. Well. Blue Frog rules now. Rendez Vous used to be good but started to cut corners (refry french fries for example), which is a crime since their burgs were lubricated magic 6 months ago. Oh well. The usual cycle of restaurants: 1)start humbly pumping out good stuff, 2)become famous, 3)enjoy fame and cash in, 4)be swarmed by people trying to be cool, 5)realize this same people are idiots and cut corners, 6)lose the loyals that created the place's reputation 7)end up as a cheap luncheon selling 29rmb chinese sets 8)go bankrupt and end up as a whackshack.
RC caffe is at stage 7 right now. If they keep their waiters after they go to step 8, I'M GAME NIGGA!
