While we were enjoying a candlelit dinner -- seriously, there was no other light source -- at No. 5, we wondered: Is there a bar or restaurant in Shanghai with more comfortable chairs? We highly doubt it. They are almost too comfortable -- we found ourselves nearly nodding off during the main course.
There's another question we find ourselves asking every time we go to No. 5: Why don't we come here more often? The place has a great atmosphere, cool location, good food, a decent beer selection and prices that are fair when compared to similar establishments. No. 5 has remodeled and refocused since we last visited. They moved the pool table, dart boards and projection TV to their own space in the back of the place (which is actually the front of the building). They are also now a jazz club, a perfect move for such a sultry venue. Check out some of their specials, like 2-for-1 steaks (beef, salmon or lamb) on Tuesdays. Word of warning: Service can be a little shaky (or at least it was on Saturday).
And no, Shanghaiist received no compensation from No. 5 for this post. When we like something, we write about it. (Mostly out of fear that all things we like in this city will get shut down if more people don't go.)

Good call. #5 is a nice place, and I've been disapointed they haven't had the success they deserve. Very comfortable, very good pasta (maybe 40-50 rmb), and back when it first opened very good fish and chips (haven't had them in about a year). Delicious warm salty peanuts.
