Mark your calendars: Anti-Invasion Day

The day before World Consumer Day, our friends across the Strait will be hosting a holiday of their own. On the anniversary of China drafting the anti-secession law into effect last year, the Taiwanese government has instituted Anti-Invasion Day, to be celebrated annually on March 14th. Sadly, Anti-Invasion Day will not be a public holiday.

China's anti-secession law codified the use of military force against the island if it moves toward formal independence. Just last week, Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian terminated the committee responsible for overseeing "unification" with the mainland, a move that solicited a cold response from officials in Beijing and protests from opposition party members.

So what are your plans for Anti-Invasion Day? Shanghaiist has always been anti-invasion -- in fact, it's safe to say we loathe invasion. We have already booked a table at Crystal Jade to celebrate our hatred of all things invasive. Somehow we think that this holiday won't catch on in Shanghai, so maybe those reservations won't prove too necessary. You can never be too careful though, right?
