Hong Kong hates on Zhang Ziyi

For whatever reason, Hong Kong locals just don't like our Zhang. They claim that she speaks English with a funky Beijing accent, that the Armani dress she wore to the Oscars made her look flat-chested, and that she "squats on the floor like a vulgar Chinese farmer when she goes shopping".

The Hong Kong media enjoys castigating her: "Lacking in youthful vigor", "Zhang Ziyi two decades behind the times", they hiss, even if she was voted Asia's Sexiest Woman in Playboy. Young Chinese boys also felt a bit miffed that she kissed a Japanese man.

We are going to be preachy and biased, OK? Ready?

Zhang Ziyi is a talented actress (although admittedly not showing it in Memoirs of a Geisha) who is a gorgeous and honest celebrity. She lacks the pretence that many celebrities envelope themselves with and she is a star that all Chinese people should be proud of. Those people that are disparaging and critical are quite simply jealous. (Sorry about that.)
