I like Dianping. So far I have found the ratings not far off the mark. But I always look at sites like this with suspicion. How can we be assured that the ratings stem are from genuine, (assumedly) low-baised customers, and not from self-serving restaurant management? At least Zagat has its own staff doing the reviews, so you can have some neutrality.

registration takes all of 5 seconds. dianping has a significantly broader coverage and much more #s of reviews per restaurant, especially if u're really into local cuisines. smartshanghai is a great site also, one doesn't have to use one site to the exclusion of others. there's definitely power in number.

I can't access any reviews without registration on that site ? SmartShanghai has user reviews of Restaurants in english & without registration : http://www.smartshanghai.com/en/scripts/reviews.php

Great site. Formerly known as Z-Survey and was in fact in English and Chinese when it first came out. But alas the CHinese market is just much bigger than the effort needed to put together an English version. Great site and very helpful in searching for my next meal for sure!
