Are we the the only ones who immediately think of Wee Britain from Arrested Development (more info here) when we watch this CNN piece on British-themed Shanghai housing development “Thames Town”? (Once on the CNN site, you need to click on the link that says “A bit of Britain outside of Shanghai” to watch the video.)
If you’re an Anglophile in China with a penchant for kitsch real estate, this town may be your cup of tea. It has Georgian-style terraces, a pub, its own covered market, even a faux Victorian waterfront.
Thames Town has been mentioned repeatedly in the Western media for more than a year now (it’s even got its own page on Wikipedia) as an example of some kind of reverse colonialism. But this is the first time we’ve actually seen images of the place — and it’s creepy.
Ten thousand people are expected to call Thames Town home. Haven’t these people seen Westworld? When humans try to live in a theme park, they die.
The story on Thames Town was the first “Shanghai Diary” installment for CNN Eye On China anchor Kristie Lu Stout.
