Let's talk about sex ... again
When a local high school backed out of a trip to our friendly local sex museum, Shanghaiist got all over it. But, we like to think ourselves as -- dare we say it -- “Fair and Balanced”. When there is progress made, we’d tell you about it, too.
Shanghaiist saw this in Shanghai Daily today:
The Shanghai Family Planning Institute will launch a survey late next month of about 6,000 people aged between 15 and 24 about their opinions on sex. It is a part of research on young people and their attitudes about sex in Asia. The same survey will also be conducted in Taipei and Hanoi, Vietnam. The project is sponsored by US-based Johns Hopkins University's Gates Institute.
Well, we don’t know what those kids might say, but our take on “sex in Asia” is a resounding “WE LOVE IT!”
Jokes aside, we are glad to see policy makers taking an interactive and open approach to this very serious issue. This contributor still recalls the wink-wink, nudge-nudge, all around uninformative "sex-ed" class he had the misfortune of sitting through in a Chinese classroom decades ago. Although we would like to hear a little more: for example, what will be some of the questions asked and how will the results be used. But anything that will take the students’ feelings/views into account deserves some praise.
But then it's back to reality. We were just forwarded a link to another Shanghai Daily story: "Sex museum sparks controversy." Here we go again.
