Finally, a fair for all of Shanghai's millionaires!

Heard of the "Millionaire Fair"? We hadn’t either, but apparently it’s coming to Shanghai. What is it you ask? The fair’s website had this to say:

The unparalleled spirit of the Millionaire Fair is based on the ideal mixture of the luxury items displayed, extraordinary entertainment and a unique hospitality concept. This is not an exhibition, it's a lifestyle…From yachts to jewellery, real estate to luxury travel, premium cars to business jets, the Millionaire Fair brings you the very best the world has to offer in one remarkable location; and all in Shanghai, Asia's hottest city.

A city that has an average personal annual income of 26,000 RMB, by the way.

So, the Millionaire Fair isn’t for the average Joe, as if the name hasn’t made that abundantly clear. But still, does Shanghai, or any other city in the world for that matter, really need a show named after the size of a person’s bank account?

We aren’t averse to the notion of wealth (Shanghaiist T-shirts are now available in all sizes for 60 RMB), but when money becomes the focal point of a culture, as it is in Shanghai, and opulence is revered as if it were a religion, that’s when we get a little queasy. The crassly named Millionaire Fair epitomizes the worst elements of this otherwise vibrant and beautiful city -- mind-numbingly tacky and over the top, we hate everything about it.

But, if you’re somehow still curious, the Millionaire Fair will be held in the Shanghai Exhibition Center, on 1000 Yan'an Zhong Lu, from April 28-30.

P.S. We heard tickets are selling fast. After all, RMB 1,500 is nothing to your average millionaire.

P.P.S. Not a millionaire? Hard to believe if you are reading Shanghaiist, but on the off chance that you are not, don't worry! You are allowed to attend the Millionaire Fair. From their FAQ:

6. Is the Millionaire Fair an event for millionaires only? The Millionaire Fair is a fair for bon vivants who are used to the good life; for people who actively celebrate their wealth, for the rich & famous, the happy few, and anyone else who wants to be inspired by the 'Luxury Lifestyle'.
