All you need to know about jaywalking in Shanghai

You may recall a few days ago we told you about about the female jaywalker who went all Sean Penn on the cop who was ticketing her (but not the camera crew who was filming it all). Well, the Shanghai Daily today offers us a jaywalking-in-Shanghai update. The highlights:

• The woman, still in jail for her tirade, yesterday resigned from her job at an education consulting company because of embarrassment brought on by her much-talked-about tantrum.
• Shanghai police began their campaign against jaywalkers and unlawful bicyclists (jaybicyclists?) in mid-April. "More than 2,100 pedestrians and nearly 5,500 cyclists" have been nabbed so far.
• Fines range from 5 to 50 kuai, but few people just simply pay the fines. Scenes like the one caught on camera are not uncommon -- well, the scratching and punching of police officers is relatively uncommon, as far as we know, but heated verbal exchanges happen all the time, which likely comes as no surprise to anyone who has spent more than 15 minute sin Shanghai. Still, we found this hard to believe: "But police say their experience from the past two weeks shows it usually takes three to four traffic officers about 15 minutes on average to deal with an uncooperative jaywalker." (We know a "streetside eatery" owner who knows some guys who could handle these situations in a more expedient manner.)
• Finally, the Municipal Office for Promoting Cultural and Ethical Progress wants to start publicly shaming jaywalkers by putting their photos on billboards in busy downtown locations.

Fifty kuai to get on a billboard? Excuse us while we go cross the street in an uncivilized manner.
