Shanghaiist Happy Hour IV: Brunch at the new City Diner

thecitydinershanghai.jpg
We like the City Diner. A lot. We won't lie. It's right down the street from our apartment and we might already be considered regulars even though the place hasn't officially opened yet (the Diner is still enjoying it's "soft opening," a phrase that, we admit, makes us giggle and, curiously, think of Sheena Easton's song "Sugar Walls" ... you can watch the video for that song here). We already have our booth and, much to our dismay, it was already occupied by another Shanghaiist on Sunday. We'll have to get used to this -- we think the City Diner is going to get pretty popular.

The Diner will celebrate its hard opening Grand Opening this weekend, and we thought, What a great excuse for another Shanghaiist Happy Hour ... and to drink alcoholic beverages in the morning! Who says happy hours have to be at night?

So here's the deal: On Saturday, May 20 from 11 am to 2 pm, 100 kuai will get you either a City Breakfast (we forget right now what this includes ... but it's a lot), a Corned Beef Hash with Poached Eggs, an Open Face Gourmet Omelet with Herb Salad or a City Burger with Fries and all you can drink Mimosas, Bloody Marys, Beer, Soft Drinks or Coffee. If you don't want alcohol, it's 75 RMB.

If you are going to drink before sundown, best not to do it alone.

Here are the details. You will no doubt see these again over the next couple weeks.

What: Shanghaiist Happy Hour IV
When: Saturday, May 20, 11 am to 2 pm
Where: City Diner, 142 Tongren Lu, Second Floor (near Nanjing Xi Lu), Tel: 62893699
What: 100 kuai gets you either a City Breakfast, a Corned Beef Hash with Poached Eggs, an Open Face Gourmet Omelet with Herb Salad or a City Burger with Fries and all you can drink Mimosas, Bloody Marys, Beer, Soft Drinks or Coffee (if you don't want alcohol, price is 75 RMB)
Again: All you can drink Mimosas, Bloody Marys, Beer, Soft Drinks or Coffee

If you can't wait until May 20, the City Diner is having a Grand Opening party this Friday, with "sliders and booze," from 7-9 pm. Not sure if you need an invite for that or not. And on Sunday -- Mother's Day -- all mothers eat free.

I hope they get their act together before your party. I too have been excited about the City Diner's amazing menu, but their execution still has a ways to go. What the classic American diner lacks in elegance, it always makes up for in consistency, service, and value. Like many other foreigners in Shanghai, I take my Western restaurant options with particular seriousness and pinned great hopes on this place. City Diner, I'm still rooting for you but one more shit meal and I'm back in the cab to Hongmei Lu for good...

75 RMB for a city breakfast or a burger and fries?

If City Diner is typical American food then it's no wonder there are so many fatties over there :)

Spare you arteries!

Oh, and City Diner's service stinks worse than their faux-blue cheese dressing.

I agree - there is no consistency at City Diner whatsoever. It's a great concept and it will work, but they need to get their act together - and do it fast - or the people who were so excited to patronize it won't come back. Everytime I go things look different and taste different, things are served cold (i understand some things are prepared in advance and reheated - just make sure they're hot) and the service is pretty bad. They should cut that menu in half and teach their crew of cooks how to make the existing dishes.
