Shanghaiist Brunch Happy Hour: Photographic evidence

Our friend Peijin managed to take some photos when he wasn't downing beers for brunch at the Shanghaiist Happy Hour on Saturday at City Diner. His photos start here. You can read some Happy Hour chatter here and some less serious Happy Hour chatter here. Shanghaiist, for one, had a nice time. City Diner's food is fantastic, and contrary to what some commenters have said, it's not all unhealthy nor is it only geared toward Americans. And guess what? There were some Americans at the Happy Hour who weren't fat! Amazing. Can we stop with that tired stereotype now? (That said, the carrot cake was delicious.) And we have to admit to enjoying the Bloody Marys -- perhaps they got worse as the party wore on and we didn't notice because the first five we had (they were small) deadened our taste buds. Thanks to the City Diner for having us! (We'll be back.)

A commenter at another Shanghai forum wondered why we didn't post much on Shanghaiist over the weekend. The easy answer is: Because it was the weekend. But this weekend was busier than most (for us, at least). Before the Happy Hour was the Roller Revival -- lots of fun ... great venue ... great music ... great costumes -- which we managed to escape with all bones in tact. Unfortunately, that is not something all of the party goers can say. There was at least one broken wrist, which shouldn't really come as a surprise since it was an open bar and most of the crowd had wheels on their feet. (Here are some photos.)

And finally, yesterday was the Second Chance Animal Aid party at Senses Wine Lounge, one of the few places in Shanghai where middle-aged Chinese women don't run away in fear from cute little puppies. If you happen to see Mat Ryan, owner of Senses, give him a pat on the back: He and Shanghaiist chased for several blocks, in the year's first real taste of Shanghai summer heat, an annoyingly fast dog (with only three good paws) who escaped from the bar's backyard. We eventually cornered her on the grounds of what may or may not have been a school of some sort. She didn't go down without a fight, however. After she squeezed though Shanghaiist's hands, Mat trapped the dog against a wall -- and he has the scars to prove it. One of the dog's good paws drew blood from a couple loactations on Mat's face. And then the dog thanked Shanghaiist by shitting all over our shorts. Good times. (The dog, named Cindy, is available for adoption, we think. If you are thinking about adopting her, buy a leash.)

So, that explains our lack of computer time over the weekend. What will explain our lack of computer time this week is our lack of a computer. We have managed to go through our second iBook in less than a month. We don't really feel like discussing it, but if you Google "iBook" + "logic board" you'll get a pretty good idea of what we are dealing with.

God-damn the I-Book and its Logic Board. Did you have the different color screens flash around?

When my logic board crashed several weeks ago on the iBook I bought in 2002, yes, I got the mosaic screen going on. It lasted for a while and sometimes if I held the iBook at exactly the right angle, it would work for around five minutes. But eventually it just went black. This was the iBook's second logic board -- the original one was replaced in the great iBook logic board recall of 2004.

So, then I moved on to my fiancee's iBook, purchased in 2003, and it didn't take long for me to break that, either. This time no colorful patterns on the screen. It just flashed a few times and then went black.

I'm assuming they are both logic board issues. I haven't had any pros look at them yet. And I'm assuming it's also just really bad luck and bad timing, although I suppose the possibility exists that something I am doing on the computer or using with the computer is causing them to self destruct.

Speaking of Mac pros in Shanghai. I previously went to ServiceOne, in a building near the train station, but the number I have for them no longer works. Anyone know where I can take these iBooks in Shanghai?

I'm planning on buying a MacBook while in the US next month. I hope they aren't as crappy as the iBooks.

Editor of laowai blog in China has endless computer problems... it seems that their powers have no limits...

Back to CD - the Cowboy steak with eggs is absolutely delicious.

Cindy was a hell story! Gee, I should have gone to the dog's day.

Shepherd's pie - yes!

Spaghetti + meatballs - yes yes yes! (and 55 RMB is reasonable).
