Thank you for your cooperation: SCO an inconvenience to residents
By now most of you know that the reason you are working this weekend is not because of a wrathful God but because the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is having a big ol' conference in Pudong. However, because of various transportation, security and aesthetic concerns (yes, your silk pajamas) the government is implementing measures that are sure to be a nuisance and inconvenience to many. Here's what we've heard thus far:
• A reader who works in Raffles City by People's Square received a company email that said no one could enter or leave the premises between 12 pm and 6 pm on June 15. They've been advised to eat lunch and be back before noon, and have been advised to bring extra food and drink.
• By far the worst punishment we've heard of thus far comes from a reader who has been told to vacate his own apartment from 4 pm-11 pm on two consecutive days, the 14th and the 15th. During this time no visitors are allowed in either.
• Yet another reader in Pudong received a notice from the local PSB (view in English and Chinese) saying that they would have to "decrease going outside," wait for friends or visitors at the entrance of the village or building (a hassle if your village is big), not hang clothes outside, put their outdoor flower pots away, and keep pets inside in order to avoid "accidents".
Public transportation is going to be affected as well. Here's a detailed list of the measures (in Chinese), and in English:
The Bund area: June 14, 18:00-22:00. Most nearby roads closed to car traffic unless you have a conference pass.Lujiazui: June 14, 16:00-22:00 and June 15, 7:00-15:00, nearby roads closed to car traffic.
Century Plaza: June 15, 14:00-21:00, no goddamn cars unless you have a goddamn pass.
People's Square: June 15, 18:00-23:00, same deal.
Yan'an Lu elevated road, tunnel, etc. : to be determined.
If you read the report above you will see that not all the roads in those areas will be closed off -- the area enclosed by the roads is closed off at the specified times, but that doesn't mean that every road that marks off the area is closed. For details, read the report.
