Bund restaurant a Conde Nast 'Journey of a Lifetime'
A few weeks back, Shanghaiist batted around the question, “what would you suggest to someone with only one night in Shanghai?” Think we just found our answer. In the June issue of Conde Nast Traveller, the magazine highlighted 20 locales worldwide as the latest additions to its “journeys of a lifetime” series. One in particular was right in our backyard, figuratively speaking of course. In an entry titled “Dine a deux at the upper Cupola”, Traveller featured a magnificent restaurant/dining room, The Cupola, located on the city’s historic waterfront, offering a sumptuous dining experience with equally breath-taking visuals to match. This is what the magazine had to say about The Cupola:
Built by the Union Assurance Company in 1916, Three on the Bund in Shanghai was the first steel-framed structure in China. It is now a glamorously reconfigured complex that contains an Armani store, an Evian spa, the Shanghai Gallery of Art and a number of excellent restaurants. The jewel in its crown is the hidden domed dining room right at the top, a stunning space so exclusive (and, it has to be said, small), that it can only accommodate two diners and a butler (who will knock before entering). The food comes from the kitchens of Jean-Georges Vongerichten's restaurant (or David Laris's or Jereme Leung's Whampoa Club, if you prefer; or you can have a course from each), and the neon-lit, 360-degree cityscape views are like nothing you've ever seen before. If there are more than two of you, the Lower Cupola seats eight.
We are guessing a reservation (and a whole lot of money) might be helpful here. No word on how far in advance one has to call to secure a table, or the table in this case. We are pretty damn curious …
On a side note, of the 20 locations that the magazine listed, China grabbed three spots. The other two being a villa at the foot of the Great Wall, and a train ride from Moscow to Beijing on the Trans-Siberian Express. Groovy!
