I have not listened to Glenn Beck's program, I would have if I could, but my XM satelite reception is a bit poor in downtown Shanghai.

As for your comment about taking the quote in "context", I can't think of a proper context (serious or otherwise)in which dismissing the city of Shanghai and the lives of its 20 million residents would be considered funny. Same goes for calling Jimmy Carter "a waste of skin". The man is an ex-president, and has done so much for humanity, have some f@cking respect.

Besides, my beef wasn't so much with Glenn Beck as it was with CNN.(really couldn't care less about Beck, American TV/Radio airwaves are filled with people like him) The network is pandering to a certain section of TV viewers at the expense of its core journalistic values. What's next? Nude news anchors? Hey now, there's an idea I can get behind.

You obviously have never listened to a Glenn Beck radio program. The whole program is based on entertaining and sardonically laughing at obsurd statements. I've only listened to Beck a dozen or so times and know that this quote about Shanghai was not done in seriousness. If you really have listened to Beck you would know that he is nothing like these right winged nut jobs... such as Sean Hannity. This article goes to prove that you have never listened to him especially when you get your information from an anti-Glenn Beck website. I wonder if the whole broadcast was listened to so that this quote could be in context. But I'm sure you would not have written this article if you had not listened to the whole broadcast?? Next time go directly to the source instead of going to Mediamatters.org.

The head of CNN needs to apologize to the city of Shanghai or be banned from reporting in the city.

Well put, Jay. I, for one, see myself as someone with a natural inclination towards a moderately conservative outlook; yet I also deplore the state of conservatism nowadays. Go to any conservative forum, and you'll be struck how many inarticulate nitwits swarm like so many swimming lava in a pool of putred, dead water.

- a reluctantly resolute liberal.

"Inferring that CNN has journalistic professionalism regarding its endeavors is the best joke in this post"

I think you meant "implying", and yes, CNN does have plenty of that, this hiring not withstanding. And you don't earn that mark by draping yourself in an American flag and saying "We support the troops" every other minute.

Just because Beck is talking about global warming, does not give him a free pass to make ignorant and racist remarks, oh wait, the "idiotic notion of global warming", excuse me.

If criticizing Glenn Beck's onair antics constitutes a gross misrepresentation of the "conservative message", then the "conservative message" as you put it doesn't stand much of a chance.

I like to consider myself a moderate on the political spectrum and at times have conservative leaning, but in no way, not now, not ever would I stand in a crowd with Glenn Beck. It's people like him, like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ann Coulter...that are poisoning and radicalizing the conservative message, not saving it.

certainly not the journalistic professionalism and integrity we’ve come to expect from the network over the years

Inferring that CNN has journalistic professionalism regarding its endeavors is the best joke in this post. The real topic of Glenn's remarks has to do with the idiotic notion of global warming. Your need to blast Glenn Beck shows just how misunderstood the conservative message really is.

Sarcasm? Saying the Knicks might win 20 games next year, that's sarcasm. Beck's statement is way over the top (and to say nothing of the bigoted undertone). If a Chinese (or any other country's) TV personality made an insensitive remark about 9/11 or Katrina, he/she would be lynched, and rightfully so.

How could CNN hire this assclown?

and

"BTW Beck later retracted his labelling of Cindy Sheehan 'a big prostitute' and more accurately described her as 'a tragedy pimp'"

yeah, think you just made my point.

Jackass doesn't begin to describe him. CNN should be ashamed.

Media Matters has documented some of his most jackass-y stuff here:
