Matt-you as well, enjoy the South (and while I would agree with Bristol's happenings, would highly suggest a trip down to Winchester for a weekend, really exciting stuff going on there).

I agree with Coco's "experimental, yet rooted" sound, good show last night (and good luck to the guys as they're on a plane now to Canada and then the EU).

Eclectic crowd-at one point we had Sebastian from Tootekool, Mark Pummell, Coco, Brad and Matsume?! Good time - made the transition from the dirty blues show we had just come from a bit easier. Ha ha.

Safe travels.

Hi Aric,

It was good to meet you at JZ last night. Coco and his band were amazing. Most jazz I hear in Shanghai is good, but very safe and conservative. I have always liked Coco's old Shnaghai jazz, but I really like what his was doing last night. It was fun, urgent and passionate.

This made me think that what Shanghai really needs is a free music festival where Coco is playing on the same bill as Cold Fairyland and B6. Why not? We had that ethos at the Pause party and it worked really well.

Tomorrow, I am going to England and France for a month. We're going to spend a few days in Bristol, which has a really successful and creative eclectic music scene where the bands organise their own shows, record labels and the infamously cheeky Choke music forum. The net effect is that the same people go to metal shows, punk bands, Americana singers and drum and bass DJs. I think Bristol should start making its own podcasts. I'm looking forward to having a cup of tea with the wonderful Caroline Martin (www.myspace.com/carolinemartinsmalldog) and buying the latest Geisha CD. By the way, Big Joan and Hunting Lodge are two well known Bristol bands that used to based in Southampton.

I have just uploaded some old footage of Marrow/ Sui onto Youtube. Marrow were an amazing rock band, cool dark, arty and noisey. Since I filmed this their singer went to Chongqing to have a baby and is now moving Marrow into an electronic/ trip hop direction. I look forward to hearing their new sound, but you can get an idea from this.

Anyway, have a good summer.

I appreciate the compliment...that being said:

As long as people are paying 4000yuan for a bottle of champagne when any local artist would play for a 1/8 of that, I'll keep on them. I know it's repetitive, believe me, I listen to the show more than any.

Again, your critique was constructive-I disagree with a few points (especially the "make it funny"-I'm a hoot), but points taken.

Aric - I don't like Bar Rouge. You don't either. In fact, I'd venture to say that most people don't. But your persistent bitching about this venue and its patrons is almost as tiring as... Bar Rouge. Good work with the show - but stop pigeonholing yourself with useless steroetypes and senseless sarcasm. It you're going to make fun, at least make it funny.
