A blog all about Shanghai's jazz scene

shanghaijazz071006.jpgShanghai's jazz scene is definitely deserving of some steady coverage, and who better to document it than someone in the thick of it? Here is how the man behind shanghaijazzscene dot com describes himself and his mission:

My name is JQ Whitcomb, and I’ve been living in Shanghai since 2003 playing jazz for a living. In the couple years I’ve been here, I’ve watched the jazz scene in town expand exponentially, with no slowing in sight. It’s been great to see and be a part of, and I’m committed to helping the scene continue to expand and improve.

I play trumpet and lead the band “5 below,” a quintet that plays regularly at the basement jazz club on the bund: number 5. I have worked previously at most of the other main jazz venues in town at some point during my time in Shanghai, and I’m happy to continue to support them as well, in the spirit of furthering a sense of community among jazz venues and musicians here.

Not sure if you can currently catch JQ in performance at Number Five or not -- last he wrote, the bar was having some performance license issues.

Comments on Theo Croker, performing at the House of Blues in Shanghai?

  • Thanks for the post. Have updated the "about JQ" info to reflect the continued non-jazz status of number five.

  • Was lucky enough to catch his set on Saturday - really good stuff.
