Shanghai’s jazz scene is definitely deserving of some steady coverage, and who better to document it than someone in the thick of it? Here is how the man behind shanghaijazzscene dot com describes himself and his mission:
My name is JQ Whitcomb, and I’ve been living in Shanghai since 2003 playing jazz for a living. In the couple years I’ve been here, I’ve watched the jazz scene in town expand exponentially, with no slowing in sight. It’s been great to see and be a part of, and I’m committed to helping the scene continue to expand and improve.
I play trumpet and lead the band “5 below,” a quintet that plays regularly at the basement jazz club on the bund: number 5. I have worked previously at most of the other main jazz venues in town at some point during my time in Shanghai, and I’m happy to continue to support them as well, in the spirit of furthering a sense of community among jazz venues and musicians here.
