Notes from the Underground: Weekend in review

The phrase “ends at 8” sends us back to that Goa party we ended up at once. Unfortunately that phrase also came up this past weekend in regards to the Female Flower Fest at YYT. Now, we understand that it’s a long and dark walk from that warehouse to the street, but we hadn’t even finished our brisket by 8 pm! We did receive stories of some laowai proposing (like, really -- not just a few warm cans of beer too many) to the lead singer of The Fuckenrolls.

Meanwhile, at Shuffle Bar, a supposed “stolen” mobile phone led the lead singer of the Cuban band to shout a few obscenities from the stage and storm off. Also, a bachelorette party showed up totally expecting “Shanghai Latin Power” to be a different kind of show.

Admittedly, still recovering from Sunday’s match (we should note that no one at Shanghaiist is actually Italian -- we just were for the night) we’re more than keen on this Friday’s happenings in the Shang, as famed visionary Akufen fills up all three levels of Tanghui at a staggering price of 100 RMB, while local fave Cold Fairyland more than justifies the cab ride to YYT with a 30 yuan price tag. To quote Lindy, lead singer/keyboardist/pipa player: “We plan on playing for two hours. This is our first show in three months (in Shanghai)."

And who knows, maybe a local celebrity will get drunk and hop on stage. From the unlinkable South China Morning Post:

An apparently intoxicated Jackie Chan disrupted a concert by Taiwanese singer-songwriter Jonathan Lee in Hong Kong and exchanged insults with the audience, a news report said on Tuesday. Ming Pao Daily News said Chan suddenly jumped on stage at the concert on Monday night and demanded a duet with Lee. He then tried to conduct the band but stopped and restarted the music several times, Ming Pao said.

As the awkward interruption dragged on, audience members started to heckle Chan and the actor replied with an insult, according to the report.

The newspaper quoted Chan as saying on stage that he was drunk.

Chan was an invited performing guest at Lee’s earlier show on Sunday night.

A spokesman for Chan, Solon So, said he hadn’t seen Chan since the alleged incident and had no immediate comment. He said he didn’t attend the concert.

Concert organisers didn’t immediately return a reporter’s call seeking comment.

Ah yes, the Drunken Master.

Aric, can you lay down the crack pipe or write your future bits in English?

So ... the show was cancelled?

Ah, those that can't - correct.

Yes, the show was over at 8 (thus the "ends at 8").

The Shuffle thing was wierd. We got there (Me, Evans and some friends) and there were just two other people in the place by that time. The singer was out front shouting at a cop and the staff were telling the cop she was just crazy and making it up.

The two others inside said that the band had put their personal effects behind the bar while sound checking. Then when the singer went to make a call, her phone wasn't there. Then she threatened to take a mic as collateral.

You could see what was going on though, the staff were just blowing her off with grins and protestations, not trying to look or be helpful and she just got double-mad.

Strange night.
