You may be familiar with the Shanghai-based pod/vidcast website Toodou.com. And you may be aware that the URL is the phonetic equivalent to Potato.com. And you also may know that “potato” is really tudou in pinyin. And you may have been like, “What’s up with calling the site ‘toodou’ then? And why does Shanghaiist start every sentence with ‘and’?” Well, the explanation is pretty simple, as Toodou.com partner Marc van der Chijs explains on his weblog. When they were choosing URLs, Tudou.com was already taken. Recently Toodou was in position to purchase Tudou.com, and the site will be officially known as Tudou.com from now on. Toodou.com will redirect. While it’s URL is getting one letter smaller, Tudou.com is expanding. They are celebrating a move to a bigger office this weekend. Congrats, guys — we don’t even have an office. (Maybe we can set up shop in your storage closet?) Video of Liu Xiang breaking the world record in the 110-meter high hurdles from Toodou.com Tudou.com.
