Doors open at 9 pm and it's "ladies night" at bonbon, so all the girls get in free and get one free drink before 11 pm. (Don't they know girls ain't nothin' but trouble?) Standard drinks are 25 kuai. We would assume there is a cover for the guys, but it's not clear on the poster. Someone said it could be RMB 40.
Although our current music collection doesn't show it much, Shanghaiist grew up on Jazzy Jeff and '80s and early '90s rap and hip-hop music. So hearing he was coming to town got us all nostalgic and we headed over to YouTube to see what we could find. We spotted some gems -- check out a couple favorites above -- and watching brought back memories of some major fashion faux pas this wannabee white boy from the sticks was guilty of (although we could never bring ourselves to do the overalls-with-one-side-undone look).
Here are some more Jazzy-Jeff-related YouTube clips:
"I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson" -- Full video featuring, you guessed it, Mike Tyson.
Jazzy Jeff Gettin' Busy -- Not sure when or where.
"Summertime" -- Classic jam. Still sounds good today.
"I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson" -- Live at the Apollo.
"Superrcalifragilisticexpialadocious" -- Wack video from Disneyland.
1-900-909-JEFF -- New Rap Every Day!
Yo! MTV Raps Promo -- Featuring Ready Rock C.
"Parents Just Don't Understand" -- Live from Club MTV.
Clip from Fresh Prince of Bel Air -- Featuring Jazzy Jeff ... and subtitles!
Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff Mix Clip -- Homemade.
"Potnas" -- From the Willenium album. Some great old school photos.
The making of "Summertime" -- Check out Will sporting Bel-Biv-Devoe-inspired "mental wear" (aka, leaving the tags on hats and other clothing). Deep.

The struggle to get cool pop bands into China hightlights the difficulty in getting groups like Naughty by Nature (do they even cut cds anymore?) into the country. If the censors didn't like some of the Stone's material, they are not going to go for blunts, B*s and H*s in every lyric. And plenty of americans will be helping their chinese friends translate the lyrics properly.
I'd personally rather see Public Enemy, Africa Bambattaa, KRS-one or Ice Cube do a tour. That is what the chinese people really need to hear.
