
- Like hairy crab? Be prepared to pay for it. The big ones are 20 percent more expensive this year, up to 110 RMB per kilo.
- Popular karaoke chain Party World (also known as Cash Box) has, in the words of China Daily, "jacked its prices up" ... by as much as 50 percent. The report says the hikes happened in Beijing -- not sure if the same has happened in Shanghai. China Daily seems to think the price increase is due to the recent introduction of a music copyright fee. Party World contends they raised rates because of service and equipment upgrades.
- A survey shows that "Chinese yuppies" prefer American brands. No surprise there, but did you know that some people call Chinese yuppies "chuppies"?
- A story about China's "mattress culture" (working so long and hard they sleep near their desks) says that 600,000 to 1 million Chinese die of overwork each year. That's a scary number.
- Four teenagers have been arrested in Zhabei District for holding up cabbies at knifepoint. The story made sure to mention all four teens were "migrants."
- Toilet-themed restaurants, made popular in Taiwan, have finally hit the Mainland.
- Mobile television will arrive in China next year.
- Regarding the recent Maglev fire: "The experts are now casting their doubts on the faults of the on-board storage battery." We're not sure if that means they think the battery caused it or not.
- Checked your hat size lately? "Heads, noses and eye sockets of people in China are becoming smaller and scientists have intiated research to discover the cause."
- Have you received the famed Google chain-mail latter? If not, you are a "nobody" in China.
- Buy your dirty Chinese dictionaries before they get taken off the shelves.
- Guard your internal organs -- the Americans are coming.
- An interesting look at the history of Shanghai restaurants and cuisine.
