GigShanghai: Sockhop, soy and naked woman x 2

Golly, we’re excited.

If not for a weekend of smart rock, which after a few weeks of angry/northern metal, should be enough to make us go No. 1 in our pants, then how about a plethora of bands (seven to eight, we hear) this weekend at Harley's (from whom we haven’t heard since the SUBS show)? Also this week is a video from our absolute favorite band here, Sonnet (see above) as well as the boys from Proximity Butterfly joining us in-studio to talk about their seven-city Chinese tour. And did we mention that we’re going to start our own GigLive nights? Must have slipped our minds …

Starting next week, every Wednesday night at Bon Bon is GigLive, our picks for the best underground music in the area (and some from out of the postcode). More to come ...

Here’s what’s in store for ya this week:

0:28 – “A lot of smart rock going on this weekend…”
1:18 – “Not it’s not everyday we have a guy with shoulder length-dreadlocks and tattoos…”
2:22 – “Led Zeppelin’s drummer really didn’t start playing drums until they started moving…”
4:30 – “Naked woman…times two means do that twice.”
5:15 – Proximity Butterfly music clip
6:33 – “There are about 30 bands (coming to the Western Power Music Fest)…”
8:17 – High Quality Soy music clip
9:09 – “It’s damn near a two-day event -- they could not have fit more bands into one day…”
10:05 – “Talk about as close to pop as you can get with still maintaining rock cred…”
10:30 – Midnight Bus music clip
11:58 – “…very 80s…I’m hearing a lot of Steve Perry and Journey in there…”
12:05 – Qi Ying music clip
13:30 – “I know for a fact it’s going to be 88 kuai, all-you-can-drink and three bands" (upcoming GigLive)
13:58 – “Let me give you a quick rundown…”

The line-up for the Harley's show is pretty exciting, especially since we haven't had a good metal show in a long time:

5:00PM to 5:45PM -- Sultans of Swing (ROCK N' ROLL)
6:00PM to 6:45PM -- Nightshift Bus (POP ROCK)
7:00PM to 7:45PM -- Magic Garden (Britpop)
8:00PM to 8:45PM -- Blue Garden (Britpop)
9:00PM to 9:45PM -- Loudspeaker (PUNK/Hardcore)
10:00PM to 10:45PM -- Mortal Sin (Brutal Death Metal)
11:00PM to 11:45PM -- Qiying (Progressive Metal)

I say, catch the San Huang Ji album release party at Yuyintang, then swing over to Harley's for the end of the Qiying show.

Listening to this Sonnet clip, and don't think it's that clever, just humdrum filler..and you say they were your favorite?

Yes, they are my fave.

What was the last show you went to, Phil?
