Drum and Bass comes of age in Shanghai when legendary DJ of the genre, Goldie, plays at club Bon Bon tomorrow night in his first China appearance.
As well as being one of the biggest names in D&B, the globe-trotting producer is also an actor and movie star, well known to fans as Angel in the UK soap Eastenders. He also appeared in Guy Ritchie’s UK film Snatch, and in the Bond movie The World Is Not Enough.
But tomorrow night Goldie will be showcasing his musical rather than acting talents in the city, thanks to Shanghai D&B promoter and DJ, Siesta -- who understandably is very excited about the whole shebang.
She told Shanghaiist, "I was a bit intimidated at first. I mean, it's Goldie! But he's been calling me and he turns out to be a very very nice guy."
Goldie's Metalheadz label was behind the legendary Sunday Session club nights at London's Blue Note club.
Siesta, the brains behind Shanghai's Phreaktion DnB crew, said "Goldie is the 'face' of D&B. D&B was at its peak when Goldie was doing his Sunday sessions -- it became 'cool'. Before that it was about D&B geeks / trainspotters standing in front of the Dj booth writing down the track list."
When asked what Goldie coming to Shanghai meant for the scene, she said, "I would prefer not to see it as an individual event, but part of the whole D&B movement. For Goldie to visit, means that Shanghai is finally showing its potential and capacity for the genre -- it will hopefully spark new interest."
Goldie will be performing alongside MC Lowqui tomorrow night, 10pm-late @ Bonbon 2F, 1329 Huaihai Zhong Road. Supporting acts: Siesta, Haze, Kingpin, Skyline, Melkman and MC Zed. Entry 100 RMB. Standard drinks 25 RMB.
