Thursday night! Live electronic at C's Antidote night: 707 vs. 101

antidoteshanghaiultraDJbarchina.jpgFor those that think "electronic music" and "live music" are mutually contradictory, you might want to check out C's Antidote night -- August 31st -- when underground techno duo Shanghai Ultra (aka Shanghaiist contributor Cameron Wilson) and Shanghainese DJ MHP bring you a night of old school live electronic music.

The duo will perform a live jam with two pieces of vintage analogue equipment - the classic Roland monosynthesizer SH-101, and the TR-707 drum machine. Not only that, all rythyms basslines, bleeps and all manner of weird noises coming out of the machines will be made up onthe spot - all improvised, nothing will programmed in advance. This is how Shanghai Ultra describes it:

Sure, there have been live performances based on pre-programmed material, but this is unique in that we won't be using laptops, digital synthesizers - our 101 is so old it doesn't even have MIDI - a standard interface to let 'talk' to computers or other synths. The 101 is a fabulous old synth first produced around 1983 and can make a sub-bass low enough to make an elephant shit itself. Myself and MHP will use its onboard sequencer to program melodies and bass-lines and will use ancient 80s technology to synchronize it to the drum machine.

We know that you don't need anymore convincing, but just in case you find yourself hesitating, let us remind you that the beers are 10 RMB.

Antidote: 707 vs. 101
9pm - late. FREE. 10 RMB beers and drinks.
C's Bar, 685 Dingxi Lu near Fahuazhen Lu.
