Extra! Extra! Evangelists, Tibetan princesses, and mobile phone TV

• A former Chinese cabinet member (an atheist) and an American evangelist have published a book based on their dialogues about religion. Read it to find out if God really exists.
• Media reports and interviews with a a Tibetan princess -- the daughter of the 10th Panchen Lama. She's a student at Tsinghua and has recently attracted a lot of media attention.
• The Chinese drank 30 mln tons of beer last year.
• China will have its own digital TV standard by 2007.
• The People's Daily reports that the new Property Rights Law might help alleviate the many conflicts associated with illegal land grabs. The new law is still being drafted but will supposedly give private property rights a more solid legal basis.
• Shanghai's lawyers are demanding greater legal protection after one of their colleagues was violently attacked.
• China changes its history:

  When high school students in Shanghai crack open their history textbooks this fall, they may be in for a surprise. The new standard world history text drops wars, dynasties and Communist revolutions in favor of colorful tutorials on economics, technology, social customs and globalization. Discussion of socialism has been reduced to a single, short chapter in the senior high school history course. Chinese communism before economic reform in 1979 is covered in a sentence. The text mentions Mao Zedong only once, in a chapter on etiquette.

• Beijing will have mobile phone TV by September 6. Beijing TV 1 and CCTV 1 will be among the first channels to be broadcasted. The phones use DAB technology, and Beijing seems to have the network set up, at least within the sixth inner ring road. But will mobile phone TV catch on? It hasn't in the UK.
• Shandong province is coming out with new laws to help migrant workers. This includes increasing the minimum wage every two years, registering all the workers, giving them more health and accident benefits, and allowing their children greater access to local schools.
• The Venice Film Festival starts soon and will include two works from Chinese film director Jia Zhangke, one fictional and the other documentary.
• Will the classic Chinese novel The Dream of a Red Chamber (红楼梦) be be remade for TV again?
