Wild Animal Olympics being held in Shanghai

chimpanimalolympicsshanghai.jpgShanghaiist didn't read the Shanghai Daily closely enough on September 22, when they ran article about the Wild Animal Olympics that started this past Thursday and will supposedly run until late November. In fact, we didn't learn about it until today when we saw these pictures from Xinhua, including 3 year old chimpanzee Bao Bao, looking sharp in pinstripes. The Shanghai Daily article states that 10 year old elephant Mary will play in the soccer (football) games ... but against who? Other elephants? Chimps? Groundhogs? We can't help but think that such a game would literally be a bloody mess.
The events are being held in the Wild Animal Park in Nanhui.

That's one smart critter. Hunter Cashdollar

Those aren't pinstripes !

I love the Wild Animal Park. I am less than impressed with their animal shows. Along with other idiocies, they have a poor bewildered kangaroo hobbling around the ring in boxing gloves. I have written to the Australian Embassy. I'm sure this matter will be at the top of their agenda.

Good thing Steve Irwin isn't alive to see this.

This is the sort of PR that China should be ashamed of, especially prior to the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Of particuar note is the scene showing bears being forced to stand on their hind legs and prodded to fight each other. For a so-called civilised country, China has a long way to go yet. China does not have a good track record in animal rights, in fact, a long documented history of extreme cruelty to animals, esp in regard to bear biling. Please write to the Chinese Embassy and register your strong protest.

Well...I didn't read such a news, but I should say sorry about this animal olympics. Yes, we indeed do not have good track credit in animal rights...but there are still many people who care about animals and do want to do sth. for them. Everything is going to be better, but needs time and effort. However, thanks for the comments!

Take action! Animals Asia, headquartered in Hong Kong, put together a sample letter that you can post or email to your Chinese Embassy in protest to these Olympics. See this link: http://www.animalsasia.org/index.php?module=6&menupos=10&lg=en

this is HORRIBLE to hear of such animal crulty, it HAS to stop NOW, animals have rights just like humans so why are they beeing treated differently, how would you like it if you got treated like one of these poor animals, they have a right 2 be wild and free not chained up for emusment for SICK, SICK people (sick as in wacked up) this is not right an i will fight till it stops! SAVE THE ANIMALS!!!!

This is such animal cruelty, and it has to stop. All animals have the same rights just like humans, and also the right to be wild and free. They are not on earth to entertain very sick people.
Save the animals!!!!!!!!!!!
