Hipster trawling bookstore makes startling discoveries

Ever since Shanghaiist has been in Shanghai, we've liked to visit the Jifeng (季风) Bookstore in the Shaanxi Lu subway stop. There's a surprise waiting for us everytime we go there, and today, there were three interesting things we found:

• Lonely Planet travel guides published in Chinese: Germany, Europe on budget, and Australia. We didn't leaf through them and so cannot say if they were written by Chinese authors or are simply translations of the English versions (our hunch is the latter). Incidentally, Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler was at the Glamour Bar on September 30 (anyone catch that and want to tell us about it?)
• English books. This store used to be exclusively Chinese (excepting learning English books), but we were surprised to see some English titles make to the main displays. We might not have noticed Emanuel Levy's All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards had it not been for Halle Berry on the cover. Good choice, person who chooses book covers. Nearby was High Treason 2: The Great Cover-Up, the sequel to High Treason: The Assassination of JFK and the Case for Conspiracy by Harrison Edward Livingstone. Bad choice, person who vets what Western books make it into largely Chinese language bookstores.
• Saved the best for last: Chinese documentary photography exhibit that will start on October 13 in Xintiandi, featuring eight of China's top documentary photographers. The exhibit is entitled "Poetry of Realism, Life Moving Forward" (现实的诗歌, 生活向前进). We think the opening night reception is open to the public, but it might be better, if you're interested, to find a way of becoming one of the 300 special people that gets an invitation.
