Rhyme slayer and hip-hop lifer MC Punchlne and Shanghaiist got together for a little interview a few weeks ago. Punch, as we call him, brings us up to date on the Lyricist Lounge, Punch’s new rap supergroup EMC and his thoughts on Janet and Justin. ‘Sexy Back’ or sexy front? You decide. Heeeeeeeeerrrreeeee’s Punchline!
Mr. MC Punchline. This interview is LONG overdue. Thank you for stopping by Shanghai and doing your thing at BonBon this month. You laid down a few tight rhymes. You even brought up Al-Qaeda in one. Speaking of hot lyrics, what is The Lyricist Lounge? The lounge is a place for mc’s to work out their skills and a place where real hip-hop lives.
How did you get involved with Lyricist Lounge? I got involved by going to a few shows and meeting the owners Danny and Anthony. They heard about me from an underground radio show I rhymed on and asked if I would like to be on the soundtrack they was puttin’ out: Lyricist Lounge Vol. 1.
Seems like you are into depth and consciousness in rhymes today, but can you tell us what today’s MCs are missing in their rhymes? I think today’s MCs are missing substance and creativity. They lack being themselves. Today, MCs are more worried about image and sales and less about the art. I feel you should be well rounded and have it all as a full package.
Who, in your opinion, is the best rapper alive today? (Please refrain from naming yourself, Punch.) The best rapper alive, to me, is Nas.
Is Jay-Z really out of retirement? Yep, Jay is definitely not retired.
As a rhyme fiend such as yourself, Punch, I’m sure you get a lot of exposure, particularly from the opposite sex. Tell us what you think about the ladies in Shanghai. Ladies in Shanghai are cool. Very pretty and different than what I am used to in the States.
Punch, Shanghai was your home the entire month of October. Anything you’ll miss about this crazy place? I will miss all the people I met and became friends with. That’s all. There are some real cool people in China.
We feel you man. Well, I have three absolutely random questions to ask you before we split. Are you ready? I’m ready.
Bill Clinton, did he or did he not inhale? He inhaled for sure. I would.
What were Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake thinking at that Superbowl? Breast Feeding.
Black or White Michael Jackson? White chocolate. How about that?
Ha ha. We like that. Punchline, thanks for doing this interview with us here at Shanghaiist.com. Got any last words for the public before we split? Look out for my group album with Masta Ace and Wordsworth and Sricklin. Our group is called EMC. Hit me up on Myspace and request for me to come back!!
