Thanks for the kind words. From what I've heard from others, travelling freely around the country was not so easy years ago, but there is no problem with it now. I'm sure there are places now that might be off-limits if I happened to run into them, but that hasn't happened yet. I didn't need anything besides a Chinese driver's license, which is a pretty straightforward process, assuming you have one from your home country, and a residence permit. And a grey market registration for the bike. The process is posted on Shanghaiist in the archives - search for car rental, I believe.

Good stuff. Wish I could come along for the ride. Keep the pics coming, they are the kind we don't normally see and tell us a lot.
Stay safe and warm.

Did you have to get a special permit to be allowed to just ride wherever you want? I always heard it was fround uppon by authorities to have foreigners roaming around the countryside. Do you have to have a license? How easy was it for you to get one if you do?
thank you!
thanks for the great tour diary!
it is very interesting for those of us not even living in china, but someday might.

Just want to commend you for the quality of your entries. With something as simple as your picture of roads on the border of Anhui/Hubei, you teach more about China to readers than an entire week of living in Shanghai can. Keep it coming, and add oil.
