Kode 9 @ Bon Bon tonight

Tonight’s a big night for dubstep, that bastard child of 2step, the favourite fry in that skanky garage family (younger sibling grime has had its day).

Kode 9, the dubstep mercenary from London, touches down at Bon Bon tonight for a special edition of Phreaktion's Booyaka! weekly.

Indeed, the DJ (Rinse FM), producer and label owner (Hyperdub) and journalist (Deuce, XLR8R, Fact) lives and breathes the underground music scene. Soon, the title of "author" will debut on that already stacked CV. Kode 9's got a forthcoming book on sonic warfare, in which he challenges the notion that sound is apolitical by examining the history of sound systems from military usage to everyday life.

Shanghaiist approves.

Bask in the glory of dark, dirty, battering bass from the resident at London's most notorious pirate radio station, Rinse. Kode 9's reggae-laced beats are, by turns, poetic and meditative, twisted and paranoid. Blaise, dji and Siesta round out the roster and (this just in!) local reggae talent Charles Perez will be lending his vocal stylings tonight.

Bon Bon, 1329 Huaihai Zhong Lu, Tel: 13816299297. RMB 120 (80 after 2 am), Open bar 8:30pm to 4:30am. DJ Jazzy Jeff (heh) in the main room.
