Yann Tiersen 'rocks' seated Shanghai crowd

About 99 percent French, 1 percent non-French. That's our educated guess on the composition of the audience Monday night at Yann Tiersen's concert in the Shanghai Concert Hall. (Read our previous Yann-related post here. That's right — he's French.)

We belonged to the French majority, and we are happy to report that it was a great concert — very intense. Five people on the stage: A girl at the violoncello and violin, and four guys at the drums, bass, and guitars. No break. Very punctual. As usual, Yann played several instruments, switching from guitar to violin to xylophone to accordion. He introduced an unusual dimension to his music and sounded more "rock" than what he has done in the past.

Unfortunately, since in the audience we had the French consul and some other "royal dignitaries", it was a bit "uptight", so not too much standing, yelling and screaming. The only words Yann uttered during the performance were "thank you very much" and "this is a new song". Well, at least we got our money's worth music-wise for the 90-minute performance! It was all about the music, and it was an awesome alternative to the kind of "exciting" concerts we have experienced in Shanghai recently.
