Shopping help from Shanghai Daily?

Parkson%20Department%20Store.jpgIf you're new to Shanghai or still in that "testing the water" phase of living here, you should be well aware of Shanghai Daily's guide to living in Shanghai, called Live in Shanghai (previously mentioned here). Recently, the website added a new and useful section about shopping in Shanghai.

Low on gift ideas and cash, Shanghaiist took a little dip in the danger zone by checking out the website's savvy new section. The new shopping site is divided into six parts: introduction, department stores, (the vaguely titled) discount, supermarkets, souvenirs, books, and bargains.

Other than the handy, easy to read PDF maps of popular shopping areas like Xujiahui and Nanjing East Road, Shanghaiist was particularly impressed with the list of discounts that department stores around the city are offering (listed in the discount section). The larger and more famous department stores in Shanghai are offering sizable discounts on their merchandise for the holiday season. Perhaps "discount" is too strong of a word. "Non-refundable voucher" is a bit more accurate.

At the Parkson Department Store (百盛), for example, for every 199 RMB spent at the department store, Parkson will supply you with a 70 RMB or 100 RMB coupon (depending on the merchandise of course) to use on a future purchase at Parkson. Be careful of fires and mysterious closings.

Shanghaiist took this advice to heart and trekked across the raging Huangpu River to meet a horde of shoppers ... on a workday ... the week before Christmas ... during rush hour. In retrospect, Shanghaiist regrets the timing of such a visit but with the helping of Shanghai Daily, our X-mas shopping is finished! If only Live in Shanghai could cure headaches.

Parkson Department Store, 918 Middle Huaihai Rd., near South Shaanxi Lu Metro Station, Exit #2, 百盛购物中心, 淮海中路918号, 陕西南路地铁站, 2号出口.

    Henrique,

We get it. You love these coupons. You think they are great.

But your comment has nothing to do with the post.

    Thanks,

"Not very useful"? Interesting Pete. I am curious. Care to expand?

I find free beer at Wonderbar, free margarita at Bubbas, free coffee at Jamaica Blue, 50% off at Azul, 30% at New York Style Pizza all pretty fkng "useful".

I imagine that there are other places in town with this kind of discount that I dont know off then.

As the expert on the web here, care to let me know where can I find these kind of deals elsewhere?

Maybe I'm missing something and this shanghaiexpat thing is really not so good.

    Pete, can you elaborate?

    Txs.

  • Pete

Yes, beware of the many caveats of shopping at those department stores.

I can only speak for myself, but I've found the coupons at Shanghai Expat to not be very useful.

I wrote this article with the holidays in mind.

  • Henrique

You mean, "save some cash" like the cash you can save with the coupons, that you weren't aware off before and now you are?

Shouldn't you be thanking me instead of trying to be The Shanghaiist Police?

Some people are born to be complainers....what horrible lives they must live...

  • Nick

Classy. Why don't we all just advertise here and save ourselves some cash?

  • Good article. ShanghaiDaily's website is well done, no wonder they are pulling so much traffic.

Wondering when will you guys write an article about Shanghai Expat Coupons (coupons.shanghaiexpat.com)?

Great deals there (50% off Azul, Buy One Coffee Get One Free at Jamaica Blue, discounts in all kinds of places ...)

Just thought I should share :)

    Keep up the good work...

  • Helen

Be careful of these sales! The coupon that they give you often has very limited choices and excludes all foreign products.
