- Reports suggest that China is going to make some changes to its $1 trillion foreign exchange reserve by getting rid of some US dollars and changing them to RMB. The report also states that part of China's forex reserves are made of Japanese yen.
- Google is going to team up with China Mobile to offer mobile internet searching on your mobile phone similar to the services offered in the US.
- Some people are discussing whether or not to eliminate the the death penalty for corruption related crimes.
- American electronics store Best Buy is all ready for its Thursday soft opening in Xu Jiahui.
- City officials have finished the work of creating ID cards for non-residents, which will help them access public resources and services (and also serve as a new means of social control?). They estimate there to be 5.81 million non-residents living in Shanghai.
- A Canadian artist and his partners are aiming to restore and preserve the old Jewish quarter of Shanghai. The $1 billion project hangs on some crucial talks that will be held soon. If the green light is given, expect the first phase to be done sometime before the Expo in 2010. The residents surveyed said they were willing to move, given certain conditions.
- 69.4% of foreign companies in Shanghai have created unions.
- A historical museum is going to be constructed over an archaeological site that dates from 700 hundred years ago.
- The Shanghai government is going to relocate 11,000 households from the Dinghai area in the Yangpu district.
- The arm of a crane at a construction site broke off and killing one person and seriously injuring another. Watch out, folks—you can never be too careful around those areas.
